Innovation that Enhances the Classroom

Every few years, a technology arrives that someone insists will change everything about schools. Some of them do. Most of them do not. The interesting part of my job is not sorting the two piles, but what happens in the classrooms while I am sorting.

I have come to think the role of a technology leader in a school is defined by a single tension: we are tasked with moving an institution toward better technology use without losing what already works pedagogically in the classroom. Both halves of that sentence carry weight. Move too slowly, and students graduate into a world we did not prepare them for. Move too quickly and we trade away the things that made the school worth attending — the teacher who noticed a student was struggling before the student said anything, the discussion that went somewhere the lesson plan never anticipated, the relationship that outlasted the course, the human factor.

The temptation is to treat this as a balancing act, a dial to be tuned between innovation and tradition. That is not right. The best technology decisions I have been part of did not split the difference; they enhanced what happened in the classroom. The worst ones added a tool and asked teachers to find a use for it.

What follows are questions I get asked often by heads of school, department chairs, teachers who are curious and slightly wary of the technology and colleagues in this role at other institutions. I do not have settled answers to all of them, but the questions themselves are worth taking seriously, and they’re the ones I keep returning to.

Keeping Technology Grounded in Purpose

Educators should teach the tools transparently, including their limits. Students and teachers should understand how a tool works, including how an AI model generates text and where it can produce inaccurate information, instead of treating it as a one-stop shop for answers. This demystifies the tech and keeps critical thinking central to how it’s used.

It is essential for a school technology leader to make technology decisions that are appropriate for their school. This is not a one-size-fits-all scenario. Knowing when to use technology and when not to use it should be predicated on your school’s unique blend of mission, needs and starting point rather than by what is trending.

Making Professional Development an Ongoing Practice

Professional development has to be ongoing, not a one-time event. Teachers need repeated, low-stakes exposure throughout the year through coaching, peer observation and follow-up check-ins. This helps the tool become second nature rather than something they have to relearn each time. It has to be tied to pedagogy, not just tool mechanics. When teachers see technology as a means to a pedagogical end rather than a separate initiative, adoption sticks.

Psychological safety matters. Teachers need permission to experiment and fail without it reflecting on their evaluation. If it is framed as exploration, they take risks. That is where meaningful, creative use of technology actually happens.

Done well, professional development does not just build skill, it builds ownership. Teachers will stop asking ‘how do I use this tool’ and start asking ‘how does this help my students learn better,’ which is really the whole point.

Choosing Technology for Impact

Looking ahead, the technology I would point to first is not a single flashy tool. It is the shift toward genuinely adaptive AI woven into daily instruction. AI has the potential to increase efficiency and help someone organize their work.  It is a great adaptive technology as well, helping those who are neurodivergent thinkers.  However, without framing, AI will become something that educators will avoid instead of teaching its use and preparing students for the inevitable future.

A few other developments deserve attention alongside the AI conversation. Data governance and privacy infrastructure are becoming increasingly important as schools contend with inconsistent definitions, unclear ownership and weak privacy controls. IT teams are often struggling to keep up with these challenges and establish consistent standards for their schools. Engagement-focused classroom tools, including interactive displays, cameras and similar hardware, are also gaining traction. However, limited professional development and the time required to learn how to use these tools effectively can prevent schools from fully leveraging their potential to support pedagogy.

As for advice to fellow technology leaders building student-centered environments, buy outcomes, not tools. Ask vendors to provide evidence of learning impact, not just a list of features.

Make teachers co-designers, not end users. The strongest innovation happens when educators decide what technology they need. Do not just get something because it looks good on a website or in a viewbook.

If there is a thread running through everything I have shared, it is this: technology should serve people, not the other way around. The emerging technologies worth our attention only matter if they free up more time and energy for genuine human connection.

At the end of the day, my job is not to chase the next big thing. It is to ask hard questions about evidence, equity and impact, and to make sure every decision we make keeps students and the teachers who show up for them every day at the center. That is what building an innovative, student-centered learning environment really means.
