Editor’s Note: School districts need transportation technology that reduces operational complexity without adding cost, training burdens or fragmented vendor relationships. David English explains how integrated platforms can support drivers, strengthen student safety, improve parent visibility and help resource-constrained districts manage routing, maintenance and daily transportation workflows more effectively.
Perhaps the biggest shift isn't the introduction of another new technology – it's the move toward fewer systems, fewer vendors and more integrated solutions.
The Driver Shortage Is Changing More Than Staffing
Driver shortages remain the single biggest concern for most transportation departments and many districts are simultaneously managing tighter budgets, a combination that has forced route cuts and service reductions in more places. Licensing hurdles and the reality of part-time, split-shift schedules make recruiting even more difficult and no software update is going to change a CDL requirement.
Technology cannot create new drivers, but it can make the job easier for the ones already behind the wheel and more user-friendly systems for the ones just starting. BusView's Driver-Assisted Tablet (DriverView) bundles real-time turn-by-turn navigation, student pick-up and drop-off data, pre/post-trip checklists, seating charts and access to Discipline-Referral records into a single screen.
For schools that prefer not to use tablets for all drivers, portable Wi-Fi sub-driver tablets provide an ingenious middle ground. Mounted via a simple suction-cup cradle with the ability to move from bus to bus, these lightweight units load routes over Wi-Fi and provide turn-by-turn directions and pop-up boarding/exiting alerts for students. Even an unfamiliar substitute can execute a route safely and accurately.
Districts Are Reconsidering Their Technology Strategy
For years, many school districts assembled transportation technology one product at a time, purchasing GPS tracking from one company, routing software from another, student ridership from a third, parent communications from a fourth and maintenance software from yet another. While this often delivered the functionality districts needed, it also created multiple contracts, separate support organizations, duplicate data entry, integration challenges and much higher long-term costs.
Other districts chose less comprehensive solutions to reduce these issues, but often found themselves relying on spreadsheets, manual processes and home-grown workarounds to fill operational gaps.
Safety Expectations Continue to Rise
Parents, school boards and administrators now expect greater visibility into student transportation than ever before. Technologies once considered optional, including student ridership verification, real-time parent notifications and onboard video, are rapidly becoming baseline requirements.
Integrated platforms help connect these technologies into a single workflow. BusView's StudentView uses RFID technology to verify every student boarding and exiting, while ParentView provides notifications for bus arrivals, unauthorized boarding locations and route delays. CameraView extends that visibility through onboard video that can be viewed in real-time or securely accessed without removing hard-drives from vehicles.
The goal isn't simply collecting more data, it's providing transportation departments, parents and administrators with timely information that improves student accountability and safety.
Looking Ahead
The pressures facing school transportation in 2026, including workforce shortages, tighter budgets and rising safety expectations, are not going away. But districts do not need to be large or wealthy to meet them. BusView was built on the belief that every student, regardless of their school's size or budget, deserves the same level of safety, accountability and transparency. With no hidden fees, real people answering the phone and a platform that scales to fit your needs, BusView helps districts meet today's challenges without a large enterprise price tag.
