In a recent interview with Education Technology Insights, Mueller talks about how building strong communities and prioritizing positive educational experiences can meet the needs of students and stakeholders alike. She also focuses on the evolving role of higher education institutions and the transformative trends impacting the education industry.

Please walk us through the roles and responsibilities entrusted to you.

I am tasked with various responsibilities, mainly focusing on three pivotal elements. Fundraising, where I collaborate with business and computer science departments. Our efforts range from direct and electronic appeals showcasing the stories of our student scholars, emphasizing the significance of financial support for their academic pursuits. Engaging with donors and potential contributors who play a pivotal role in sustaining scholarships is a crucial aspect of my work, inviting individuals to invest in the future leaders of tomorrow.

I also spearhead the Business Innovation & Growth Center that serves not only our institution but also the wider community. This Center provides resources and guidance to individuals interested in starting their own businesses or managing family-owned businesses. Experiencing the journey of aspiring entrepreneurs as they navigate and develop viable solutions to real-world challenges has been a truly exciting experience.

"Looking ahead, we recognize the value of a hybrid approach, combining traditional and online modalities to cater to different student demographics effectively."

Another element revolves around adult education, acknowledging the importance of upskilling and reskilling working professionals in rapidly evolving workplaces. Supplementary courses are designed to enhance leadership skills and focus on emerging areas such as cybersecurity, digital marketing, and business analytics. Further, by providing badge credentials and exploring stackable education options, professionals are empowered to adapt to new demands, whether they seek specific technical skills or aspire to pursue higher degrees.

How has the education industry transformed in the digital age? What are some of the new elements that have become part of day-to-day activities?

Over the last 24 months, the education industry has undergone a significant transformation driven by the need for digitalization. Adapting to online learning became a necessity, even though some courses were not initially designed for remote delivery. Looking ahead, we recognize the value of a hybrid approach, combining traditional and online modalities to cater to different student demographics effectively. This approach acknowledges the challenges faced by students adjusting to remote learning while also serving those who benefit from self-paced online education.

As a working parent myself, I have personally witnessed the impact of the pandemic on young children's language and educational development and the emotional strain faced by families. It is crucial to assess the outcomes of these challenges and work toward regaining lost ground. During this transitional period, multiple aspects need careful consideration. Some include striking a balance between work and personal life, closing the digital divide, managing financial instability, addressing feelings of loneliness, and understanding where you are now and where you want to be.

What are some of the new trends that will have an impact in the next 18 months?

Moving ahead, a couple of significant trends will stand out in shaping the future of education. Empowering students and community members through entrepreneurship and business planning will gain prominence. Encouraging individuals to explore their passion, develop side hustles, or even become self-sufficient entrepreneurs will play a vital role in preparing them for the diverse opportunities of tomorrow.

What is your advice to your fellow peers and colleagues in the education industry?

To create a transition from legacy systems to new approaches, we need to listen and nurture. Institutions must actively listen to the needs of their students, alumni, and stakeholders. Taking meaningful steps to address individual needs fosters a sense of purpose and value. Instead of fixating on reverting to the old ways, viewing this period as a fresh start allows us to better serve the evolving educational landscape. Agility and adaptability are key to meeting the ever-changing needs of our students, alumni, and friends of the University, instilling confidence, and driving positive change.
