Charla Griffy-Brown is a multidisciplinary leader with more than 20 years of experience in global digital transformation and technology management. She specializes in information systems, cybersecurity programs, and data analytics, working closely with organizations in these fields. Currently, as the Dean and Director General of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Griffy-Brown oversees academic programs across 14 centers worldwide.

Journey in Global Digital Transformation

My career in technology started with research and advocacy. I have worked with many businesses and executives in information systems and technology management, which improved my analytical skills. As a board member in trading firms, I have used my knowledge to implement predictive analytics, cybersecurity programs, and other operations that meet industry standards. My skills and knowledge developed over the years now empower me to support future learners.

Today, my role as the Dean, Director General and Professor of Thunderbird School of Global Management presents a significant opportunity to advocate global digital transformation for all aspiring learners. The business school is operated within Arizona State University for academic collaborations and initiatives. Consequently, my leadership role within the university propels my mission to impact the educational landscape meaningfully.

Industry Trends and New Advancements

My experience in technology is inclined toward progressive developments, highlighting futuristic tools and programs. Based on my observations, the most intriguing aspect of digital transformation is its adaptability. Unlike conventional frameworks, AI, automation, cybersecurity, spatial computing, and other sustainable solutions are emerging with new updates in the market. Each of these technologies accelerates to the next level, transforming higher education and its learning experiences through innovative methodologies.

Machine learning automation and generative AI are being extensively adopted in education. Generative AI drives predictive analytics, content creation, and coding, resulting in significant improvements in digital design processes across various sectors. Likewise, the digital infrastructure of 5G connectivity is developing throughout the world, enhancing the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and the whole digital ecosystem. Businesses in both the private and public sectors have become familiar with these technologies to optimize workflows that improve the constituent experience for users.

Delving into more advanced solutions, we find that cybersecurity and spatial computing are at the forefront of data protection and learning experience. Key data frameworks, like Europe’s AI Act and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), uphold all security standards. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) simulate students’ engagement with real-world applications. Correspondingly, educational institutes are adapting to new hybrid work models to promote these innovative technologies, including green solutions for educating learners about sustainability and social responsibility.

Simplifying the Learning

We at Thunderbird School of Global Management ensure governance alignment with overarching architecture and strategic goals. A team in authority is responsible for selecting tools and technologies that support teaching and learning. They oversee new trends and advancements in the industry and curate a list of suitable ones for implementation on campus. Conversely, another faculty committee manages workshops, conferences, clubs, and other significant programs encouraging students to apply their learning in real time.

Our students learn to acclimate to every innovative thing introduced as they strive to engage with new tools that simplify their learning. They are guided by a research group of instructional designers and a technology group of experienced faculty. I see them working together to develop knowledge and create extensive opportunities to achieve the standard goals of education. This combination helps leverage existing systems that enhance academic efforts. Subsequently, our research and innovation-focused curriculum across the organizational group incorporates success for all our learners and professors.

Strategies to Adopt Pioneering Technologies

Technology is a perpetual evolution in any field or sector, so it is a tactical decision to leverage the right tools and systems. Any technology integration requires strategic planning, transparent communication, and a clear focus on change management instead of simply adapting new tools. It is essential to understand the key requirements of the organization by considering its objectives, budget, resources, capabilities, and other constraints that affect the integration. Following a systematic approach in change management reduces resistance and fosters engagement throughout the transformation process. Additionally, team members require effective communication and real-time transformation to associate with the modified system.

I have witnessed different situations in the organizations in which I have worked. Many prioritized their scalability, security, and interoperability solutions to attain successful digital transformation. Over time, I realized that building a resilient infrastructure is more crucial than any other arrangement. It solely defines the stability of all applications involved in the company's operations. During that time, cybersecurity was crucial for data protection and risk management. We developed proactive security systems encompassing cutting-edge technology, processes, and resources. Ultimately, we recognized the necessity of establishing data governance to avoid underestimating the importance of effective change management. Any entity dealing with technology must possess vision, agility, and patience to navigate this evolving landscape.
